11.2. A steering with the electromechanical amplifier

On cars in some complete sets possibility of installation of the electromechanical amplifier of a steering is provided. The main differences of such amplifier from the hydraulic: the part of capacity of the engine for a pump drive is not selected; there is a possibility of differentiation of effort on a steering wheel depending on speed of movement of the car (feedback).
The electromechanical amplifier is established on a steering column and influences directly a steering shaft. For teamwork with the electromechanical amplifier on the car establish the steering mechanism similar on a design to the mechanism of the car VAZ-2123 "Field", but having number of the improvements raising its reliability and accuracy of work.

Elements of a steering column with the electromechanical amplifier are shown on fig. 11.2.
1. In a motor compartment turn away a nut of a coupling bolt of fastening of the bottom end of an intermediate shaft 1 (fig. 11.2) to a shaft of a worm of the steering mechanism and take a coupling bolt.
2. In car salon turn out screws of fastening of a sealant of a shaft of a steering column and remove it.
3. Remove facing casings 4 and 10 steering columns.
4. Disconnect pad with wires from подрулевых switches, the switch of ignition and the electromechanical amplifier.
5. Turn away bolts and nuts of fastening of a steering column and remove it in gathering with shaft 1, 7 and a steering wheel 6.
6. If necessary remove the electromechanical amplifier from a steering column and check up its work according to a separate management on the amplifier, put to the car.
7. Establish a steering column in an order, the return to removal.

Removal and installation of the steering mechanism
The steering mechanism remove for replacement or repair. However dismantling and assemblage of the mechanism demand application of the special tool and presence of skills of work from the executor. In the absence of these conditions it is recommended to repair the steering mechanism in a specialised workshop.
1. Establish the car on the lift or a viewing hole.
2. Disconnect a wire from the plug «–» the storage battery.
3. Turn away a nut of a coupling bolt of fastening of the bottom end of an intermediate shaft 1 (fig. 11.2) to a shaft of a worm of the steering mechanism see and take out a coupling bolt.
4. Take out шплинты nuts of fastening of fingers of spherical hinges to сошке and turn away a nut.
5. By means of a stripper выпрессуйте spherical fingers from apertures сошки (section 7 "Steering", «Replacement of steering draughts» see).
6. Turn away a nut of bolts of fastening of the steering mechanism to a longeron of a body and remove the steering mechanism.
7. Establish the steering mechanism in sequence, return to removal, thus execute the following:

– Establish сошку the steering mechanism in average position, thus the label at an end face of a shaft of a worm should be located horizontally on the right (in the direction of the car) and distance Х (fig. 11.4) from the centre of the bottom aperture сошки to a basic surface on a body longeron should be (33,1+5) mm;
– Before tightening nuts of bolts 1, сориентируйте the steering mechanism so that the corner and was 32 °;
– Check up and if necessary adjust corners of installation of forward wheels.

Dismantling and assemblage of the steering mechanism

1. Merge oil from the steering mechanism, having turned out a stopper 16 (fig. 11.3) маслозаливного apertures see and having turned the mechanism a stopper downwards.
2. Turn away a nut of fastening the helmsman сошки and, having removed the spring washer, a special stripper remove сошку.
3. Turn out bolts of fastening and uncover 15 crankcase the steering mechanism together with shaft 7 сошки.
4. Turn away a nut 12 and, rolling in a cover 15 adjusting screw 9, separate a cover and a shaft 7 сошки.
5. Turn out bolts of fastening and uncover 3 persistent bearings of a shaft of a worm together with adjusting linings 4.
6. A worm 13 push out from crankcase an external ring 5 bearings and take out a shaft together with a separator 6 bearings.
7. Take from crankcase 1 epiploon 18 shaft of a worm and an epiploon 19 shaft сошки.
8. Approaching on the size оправкой выпрессуйте from crankcase an external ring of the top bearing of a shaft of a worm.
9. Take bearings 17 of crankcase 1 and covers 15.
10. Carefully examine, whether there is no on working surfaces of a roller and a worm of wear tracks, a jamming or рисок. The worn out and damaged details replace.
11. Ball bearings of a worm and a roller should rotate freely, without jamming; on a surface of rings and balls there should not be a deterioration and damages. The damaged bearings replace new. If the roller rotates on an axis with jamming or has люфт, replace a shaft сошки in gathering with a roller.
12. Collect the steering mechanism in an order, the return to removal, meeting following conditions:
– After installation of a worm in картер the steering mechanism and fastening of the bottom cover 3 check up a dynamometer the moment of a friction of a worm, it should be 19,6–49,0 Н·см (2–5 кгс·см). If the moment appears less specified, reduce quantity of adjusting linings 4 and if more – increase;
– After shaft installation сошки be convinced of absence of a backlash in gearing of a roller with a worm in positions of the shaft turned to the right or to the left on 30 ° from neutral position сошки. If the backlash is, eliminate its adjusting screw 9;
– After backlash adjustment in gearing of a roller and a worm check up a dynamometer the moment of a friction of a shaft of a worm which should be equal 68,7–88,3 Н·см (7–9 кгс·см) at turn of a shaft of a worm on 30 ° both to the left, and to the right from average position and should decrease smoothly to 49 Н·см (5 кгс·см) at turn from a corner 30 ° against the stop.
13. Fill in in the steering mechanism oil.

Check and backlash adjustment in bearings of a worm of the steering mechanism on the car
1. Establish forward wheels in position of rectilinear movement.
2. Turning a steering wheel in that and other party, check up, whether there is axial moving of a shaft of a worm 13 (fig. 11.3 see) rather crankcase no 1 steering mechanism. Presence of axial moving of a shaft of a worm is a backlash sign in bearings of a worm.
3. If axial moving is felt, turn a steering wheel in a left-hand side on 1–1,5 turns.
4. Turn out bolts of fastening of the bottom cover 3 and merge oil from crankcase the steering mechanism.
5. Remove the bottom cover, remove one of adjusting linings 4 or replace with its more thin.
6. Fix the bottom cover and check up, whether there is no axial moving of a worm to bearings.

       THE NOTE
Adjusting linings are delivered in the thickness of 0,10 mm; 0,15 mm; 0,30 mm; 0,50 mm.

7. In the absence of moving fill in in the steering mechanism трансмиссионное oil.

Check and backlash adjustment in gearing of a roller with a worm of the steering mechanism on the car
1. Check up, whether there is no axial moving of a worm to bearings (in bearings of a worm of the steering mechanism Check and backlash adjustment see the car »«).
2. By means of a stripper выпрессуйте fingers of spherical hinges of steering draughts from apertures in сошке (Removal and installation of the steering mechanism »see«).
3. Disconnect steering draughts from сошки, keeping thus straightforwardness of forward wheels.
4. Shaking сошку, check up, whether there is no backlash in roller and worm gearing.

       THE NOTE
Within steering wheel turn on 30 ° in each party from neutral position should not be a backlash, that is a notable free wheeling сошки.

5. If the free wheeling сошки, ослабьте a nut 12 (fig. 11.3 see) adjusting screw 9 is felt.
6. Wrap the adjusting screw before backlash elimination.
7. Holding the adjusting screw with a screw-driver, tighten a nut 12.
8. Be convinced that сошка does not move (item 1) see, and attach to it steering draughts.
