3.9. An engine overheat

At engine work the serviceable system of cooling supports an optimum temperature mode. Infringements in work of system of cooling can lead to an engine overheat. If to pass this moment, there can be unpleasant consequences: breakdown of a lining of a head of the block, коробление heads and, as consequence, difficult repair of the engine.
In a combination of devices of any car there is an index of temperature of a cooling liquid. If the engine overheats, the arrow of the index comes nearer to a red zone.

Check of system of cooling
At overheat first signs if the arrow of the index of temperature has left in a red zone, but from under a cowl steam clubs are not pulled out, completely open the crane of a heater and air заслонку managements of an air flow, include the heater electric motor for the maximum speed.
Include the alarm system, squeeze out a pedal of coupling and, using inertia of the car, try to move cautiously to edge проезжей parts and to stop as it is possible more to the right at a roadside and if it is possible – outside of проезжей parts. Allow to the engine to work to steam of minutes on a normal rate of rotation of idling with the heater included on a total power.

Do not stop the engine at once! The Only stipulation – preservation of tightness of system of cooling. If has burst or the hose has come off or other place of leak, except emission of a liquid from under a stopper of a broad tank was formed, the engine should be stopped immediately!

After a stop перегретого the engine the local overheat of a cooling liquid in places of its contact to the most heat-stressed details of the engine and formation of steam stoppers begins. This phenomenon is called as "heatstroke".
1. Stop the engine.
2. Open a cowl and examine подкапотное space. Define, steam whence is pulled out. At survey of the engine pay attention to presence of a cooling liquid in a broad tank, on an integrity of rubber hoses, a radiator, the thermostat.

Never open a stopper of a broad tank at once. The liquid is in cooling system under pressure, at opening of a stopper pressure will sharply fall, the liquid will begin to boil also its splashes can scald you. If you wish to open a stopper of a broad tank on the hot engine, preliminary throw from above with a dense thick rag and only after that cautiously turn a stopper.

3. Glance under the panel of devices – whether there is no under it a leak or traces of the cooling liquid following from a radiator or the crane of a heater.
If leaks of the cooling liquid were found out, the burst hose can be restored temporarily by means of a sticky tape. The leak of a radiator, the thermostat or a heater is difficult enough for eliminating on a place, therefore in such situation it is necessary to add water in system of cooling and at movement to watch closely the temperature index, periodically restoring level in cooling system.

Long use of water instead of antifreeze leads to a scaling in system of cooling of the engine, to deterioration of its cooling and, as consequence, resource reduction. Never add cold water in перегретый the engine. The engine should cool down with an open cowl during a minimum of 30 minutes

4. If the leak of a cooling liquid is not present, check up, whether it is whole and as will pull a belt of a drive of the generator (simultaneously results in rotation and the water pump). The torn belt replace or adjust its tension (section 4 "Engine" see).
5. The engine can overheat in case of failure of the thermostat which regulates passage of a stream of a liquid to cooling system through a radiator or by it (for acceleration of warming up of the cold engine). For thermostat check it is necessary to check up on the heated-up engine to the touch temperature of the bottom hose connecting the engine with a radiator. If the bottom hose of a radiator cold – the thermostat is faulty, circulation through a radiator is not present.

The big role in maintenance of an optimum temperature mode is played by the valve of a stopper of a broad tank. It supports in system superfluous pressure not less than 0,1 МПа (1,1 kgs/sm2). Thus the temperature of boiling of water raises to 120 °С, and antifreeze to 130 °С. Unfortunately, at valve jamming in the closed position at an overheat arises considerable excess of superfluous pressure [more than 0,2 МПа (2 kgs/sm2)] that can lead to rupture of a broad tank or failure of one of hoses.

Therefore once a year is necessary for washing out a stopper of a broad tank flowing water, and the valve to check on absence залипания finger pressing. In the presence of doubts replace a stopper.
It is obvious that if on перегретом engine to remove a stopper of a broad tank and on time this action will coincide with "heatstroke", boiling up of a liquid and formation of air stoppers in cooling system will be guaranteed.
Once a year wash out cells of a radiator a water stream of a high pressure (on a special sink), directing a stream at first towards to a running air stream, and then in its direction for removal from a surface of a radiator of the dirt, the stuck insects and road dust. Thus efficiency of a radiator is partially restored.
